Celebrating Black Love: Hosting a Juneteenth Wedding Celebration

Juneteenth is an extremely important day, not just in Black history but in American history as a whole, as weddings and marriages were an aspect of everyday life that had long been denied to African Americans during slavery. But, it wasn’t only during the 89 shameful years of slavery, that weddings and marriages were illegal! Black weddings and marriages were also still heavily restricted long after slavery was abolished. So, in honor of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday we’re taking a closer look at the history of Black weddings and marriage in the United States

For Starters, What Is Juneteenth?!

For those who may not yet know, Juneteenth is a symbolic day that commemorates the emancipation of Black Americans from slavery in the United States of America. While the Emancipation Proclamation, a presidential proclamation and executive order that freed all slaves in the Confederacy, officially came into effect on January 1, 1863, the proclamation wasn’t announced or enforced at that time.

It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, that Major General Gordon Granger issued an official public order notifying the people of Texas that all slaves were free and that the Civil War was over. Unfortunately this news didn’t spread quickly, and many slaveholders didn’t take heed, and the few people who tried to comply with the emancipation order often found themselves in grave danger.

But the newly freed men and women in Texas, took matters into their own hands, and committed to marking and celebrating the date, June 19th 1865, as the official end to slavery beginning in 1866. But, it wasn’t until 1980 that Texas finally recognized the holiday and made Juneteenth an official state holiday, and once Texas made it official, 45 other states and the District of Columbia followed suit, by either establishing a state holiday or setting the date aside as a special day of observance.

And, bringing Juneteenth into the present, June 19th was first recognized as a federal holiday in only 2021!  President Joe Biden officially signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law after the incredible efforts of activists Lula Briggs Galloway, Opal Lee, and others.

Embracing Traditions at Black Weddings:

Given the large number of countries and cultures from which the slaves originated, Black weddings have become a robust and far reaching collection of traditions and themes that have evolved along with the long journey to freedom. At their essence, American Black weddings are a celebration of love and history, and with them come some very powerful, meaningful rituals, which carry themes of unity, commitment and honor.

Taste The 4 Elements

This tradition is thought to originate from the Yorùbá culture of West Africa, and incorporates the tasting of four distinct flavors meant to represent the four distinct emotional “flavors” of a marriage. During this ceremony ritual, the couple shares the tastes of something sour, bitter, spicy, and sweet. This ritual is seen as a testament of the couple’s willingness to stay together “for better or worse.”

Libation Ceremony

In this traditional ceremony ritual, one of the family, and generally an elder, pours either  liquor or holy water in each of the four directions (north, south, east, and west) to honor the couple’s ancestors as well as those who have recently passed. This elder then usually shares some wisdom, advice and finally a wedding blessing with the couple. Libation ceremonies have roots in many African cultures.

Jumping The Broom

As discussed earlier, during slavery, Black Americans were not legally allowed to marry.  So, rather than an ordained minister legally conducting a wedding, slave owners or plantation foremen would fetch a broom and have the enslaved couple jump over it to seal their unofficial union. Jumping a broom was meant to signify their commitment to one another. And, though this tradition goes back to the beginning of slavery, it was re-popularized during the 1970s by the novel and miniseries Roots, which gave Black American a heart wrenching glimpse into their ancestors’ lives. Many still incorporate this tradition as an ode to their forefathers.

Tying The knot

In many African cultures, a bride and groom’s wrists are tied together with either cloth, rope, or braided grass during the marriage ceremony. Then an elder prays over the couple’s union for long life and till death do them part. The meaning behind this tradition is to represent eternal unity, and is similar to the Celtic tradition of handfasting

Black Love Is Resilient and Enduring

Now more than ever, in this polarized political climate, it is important to highlight the voices, the relationships and the impact of Blackness in America and the entire world. Black Americans human rights have been hard fought for, and the fight continues today.

Here at Beat Train Productions we stand behind Black love, and Black lives and all that comes with them! We are grateful for the sacrifices of the Black ancestors that fought against injustice in the face of impossible odds, and that carried traditions forward for current generations to experience! Black love, and Black Joy, in all its forms, should be honored, protected and celebrated!

Finding Your Dream Wedding Venue

You can’t have a wedding without first finding the perfect space to host the event! So, understanding how to pick a wedding venue is one of the most crucial components of planning a wedding. No matter what kind of venue you are after, choosing a wedding venue is an important task that needs to take place before you get very far along in the wedding planning process.

Research

But, before you jump into the process of actually vetting potential wedding venues, you and your fiance need to do some brainstorming and research, looking for potential wedding venues. Online research is a great first step in the search process, but websites should never replace seeing the space in person, as a couple.

Instagram

For all things weddings, Instagram is your friend! And, that holds true for the venue search as well! To start, you can try scrolling through locale-specific hashtags like #[yourcity]weddingvenue to see if you can uncover a hidden gem or two in and around the locale where you plan to tie the knot. If something piques your interest, give their account a follow. This will allow you to come back at a later time to more thoroughly research the options you’ve stumbled upon.

Recommendations

In much the same way that word of mouth is a great way to discover beloved must-visit restaurants, lean on friends, both engaged and recently married, for venue suggestions! Keep in mind that while word of mouth opens you up to a barrage of advice, the wedding is ultimately your day as a couple to plan however you see fit, so you need only listen to the input that serves you and your partner.

Wedding Planner

Your wedding planner will be an invaluable resource throughout the wedding planning process, especially as you wade through all those wedding venue ideas early on. As pros, they’ll understand non-negotiables to be on the lookout for, and explain them to you. They’ll also be able to help you see the vision of how your wedding style could come to life in a potential space.

Set A Budget, General Location and Season

Your wedding budget and the location where you hope to tie the knot will greatly affect the wedding venue you ultimately select. Having an understanding of what you can afford and where to focus your search will ensure the process of selecting a wedding venue is as seamless as possible. Additionally, while you don’t need to know your exact wedding date prior to booking a venue, you should have a grasp on the time of year you’d like to tie the knot, as some venues may be closed during certain times of year and could be off the table for your wedding.

Plan Around Your Guest List

Without a clear understanding of your guest count, you won’t be able to select a wedding venue that will be able to effectively accommodate your guest list. Imagine booking a small and intimate space, only for your guest count to balloon to close to 300 people. It’s of utmost importance to decide on the number of guests you plan to invite prior to making a final decision about your wedding venue.

Consider Your Guests’ Experience

From the time your guests arrive until they depart at the end of the night, what will their experience be like? Think about temperature concerns. Think about a venue with easy-to-find bathrooms. Think of the mobility and accessibility needs of your guests. Think of the things that will make being a guest at your wedding a comfortable, enjoyable and seamless experience.

Tour Potential Venues

Site visits, ideally with your wedding planner in tow, are always a good idea. If you book a wedding venue site unseen you may run into surprise(s) later that you would’ve been made aware of had you simply booked a site visit. Also, you might miss out on the venue of your dreams, simply because it doesn’t translate well to online photos.

Read The Reviews

A great way to get a sense for your short list of venues is to see what other couples have to say and how their weddings met, fell short of, or exceeded their expectations.

Trust Your Gut!

Simply put…You will know when you are standing in the space that you want to celebrate the start of this wonderful new life with your person.

Can We Have An Adult Flower Girl (Person) At Our Wedding?!

While in the past, flower girls were generally children under the age of nine, we’ve been seeing a growing trend of couples having adult flower girls, guys, people or grannies at their wedding ceremonies!  It’s certainly a fun twist on the (maybe outdated) traditional wedding party role, and can sure make for some fun Reels, TikToks or footage for your videographer, but is it appropriate from an etiquette perspective?!

What Does an Adult Flower Girl or Guy Do Anyway?

The adult flower girl (person) is considered a member of the bridal party, along with the maid of honor, bridesmaids and junior bridesmaids, and there may be only one flower girl or several. Typically, a couple would only have an adult flower girl/guy/person if there aren’t any young children in their life who can or want to take on the role.

And, when it comes to the big day, just like a child flower girl, the role of an adult flower girl/guy/person is pretty simple. During the processional, the flower person will walk down the aisle right before the bride, throwing flower petals and maybe some biodegradable glitter! After that, the adult flower person may choose to stand at the altar with the rest of the wedding party or to simply take a seat in the front row for the rest of the ceremony.

Who Can Be an Adult Flower Person?

Having an adult perform the role of flower girl is always unexpected and humorous, and has a way of eliciting smiles and chuckles from the other wedding guests. Some couples even opt to have both of their grandmothers serve as their flower girls, to give them a sweet and special role in the ceremony. We’ve also seen bridesmaids and groomsmen acting as flower girls during the processional.

Otherwise, the role of an adult flower person could be bestowed upon a willing close friend or family member who would like to be, but isn’t currently a part of the wedding. However, when it comes to asking a loved one to be an adult flower person, we recommend considering how you will broach the subject, as some grown adults may take offense to being handed a role normally reserved for a five year old! But, others may love the idea and eagerly (and dramatically) take on the role, and still other loved ones may even volunteer to be an adult flower person without any prodding!

What Does an Adult Flower Person Wear?

You probably shouldn’t expect (or want) your grown-up flower person to wear a frilly, tulle flower girl dress, like a child flower girl would wear. Meanwhile, if your adult flower person is already in the wedding party, they should simply wear their wedding party attire, but might want to accessorize with a flower crown, or other floral accessory to let them stand out from the group! But, If your adult flower person isn’t otherwise a member of the wedding party, let them choose their own attire in the wedding colors so they’ll still feel like part of the crew. And if your Grandma’s are acting as your flower girls, they should wear whatever makes them feel comfortable, beautiful and confident on the big day!

Lessons In Love: Advice From Long Time Couples

What is it that separates the marriages that end from the marriages that stay the course? And, what can you and your sweetheart do to ensure that you will still be together and celebrating 10, 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years together?!

Well, over the years DJing weddings in NYC, New Jersey and Boston, we’ve heard more than our fair share of relationship and marriage advice, call it a wedding industry professional hazard or perk, if you will!

So, now we’ve decided to take the time, and compile a very concise curated collection of the most repeated, most important and most life changing marriage advice we’ve heard!

Love That’s Grounded In Reality

There might be a reason that in ancient times, many people generally considered love to be a kind of sickness. Parents would warn their children about falling into it, and adults would often quickly arrange marriages before their children were old enough to make marriage decisions for themselves, and in the blind throes of passion, no less.

But, abiding love, the kind that is deep and true, is impervious to sudden emotional storms or fleeting flights of fancy. It is instead a constant and deep commitment to a person regardless of changing circumstances. True love is a constant commitment to a person who doesn’t exist solely to make you happy, as well as a person who will need to rely on you, just as you will rely on them.

This kind of love is more challenging to sustain, because it doesn’t feel good all the time, and it’s often unglamorous. It’s going to doctor’s appointments, taking care of your partner when they’re unwell, dealing with insecurities and fears (theirs and your own) even when you don’t want to. But this form of love is also ultimately more satisfying and meaningful than everything is shiny and new! This kind of love has a slow, steady quality, not just a series of highs.

Respect, Respect, Respect…And Communication

One of the things we hear most from people with marriages going on 20, 30, or even 40 years is the utmost importance of respect within the relationship. After all, communication will have breakdowns at some point in time, conflicts and challenges are unavoidable and feelings will be hurt at times.

But, having unwavering respect for your partner can help cushion both of you from the hard landing of human fallibility. It’s crucial that you hold each other in high regard, believe in each other and trust that your partner is doing their best with what they’ve got, at all times. Without that solid base of respect, you will develop doubts about each other’s intentions. And, if you go down that path, you will begin to judge your partner’s choices, infringe on their autonomy, or feel the need to hide things from one another out of the fear of criticism. Respect will rescue your relationship and keep it strong and vital!

Embrace The Ebb And Flow Of Life

This is a sentiment we hear all the time! Think of your relationship as a series of waves, meaning that relationships, just like the ocean, contain constant waves. Some waves might last for hours, some might last for months, some might even last for years. The key to relationship success is to understand that very few of those waves – even the ones that knock you off your surfboard – have anything to do with the quality of your relationship. Many are simply part of the collective human experience of being alive and everything that comes along with that. Meaning… in the course of your marriage you or your spouse may lose jobs, loved ones are going to pass on, you might need to relocate, or switch careers. You might make a lot of money, you might even lose a lot of money.

But, your job as a committed life partner is to ride those waves with the person you love, regardless of where they go, and even if the waves scare you. Because ultimately, none of these waves will last. Soon enough the swell will stop, and if you can stay connected without casting blame, you’ll be sitting in still, clear water together… holding hands and gazing into the sunset.

What Sets Beat Train Apart From the Competition?!

Yacht Club Wedding

With all the event entertainment companies around today, what stands out and sets Beat Train apart from the competition!?! Keep reading to find out!

The Beat Train Origin Story

Founded more well over a decade ago, Beat Train got its start in the wedding DJ world. After seeing one too many weddings absolutely fall flat because of a boring or out-dated DJ, we knew we had to act. After all, a wedding should be one of the happiest days of a couple’s lives together! The newlyweds shouldn’t have to worry about guests standing around awkwardly while the DJ blasts generic music that no one’s into!

Customization is where it’s at when planning a wedding, as no couple is exactly the same, and, as such, no wedding should be exactly the same. At Beat Train we believe that all events deserve a unique and personalized touch. That means that we won’t pay out-dated mixes and  reuse pre-made playlists! We don’t believe in the “wedding DJ in a box” style of party!

And, now, after thousands of 5-star weddings, we’re 100% comfortable with saying that our personalized approach to weddings is the way to go. With Beat Train Productions, you will never get a one-size-fits-all wedding! But, we’re not content to just handle weddings like that. We also don’t think that birthday parties, anniversary parties or corporate events deserve a boring DJ either! We believe every event, no matter what it may be, needs a unique vibe.

What People Remember About Events

Something we’ve also learned along the way, is that what guests remember most is how they felt during an event. Was it exactly like the last wedding they attended? Or just like the club they were at last weekend? If the answer is yes, then it was a forgettable event, but at Beat Train we aim higher than that! At Beat Train, we think that the last word that should be used to describe any event is “forgettable.” We aim for words like fantastic, incredible, marvelous, stupendous, or unforgettable!

Hiring The Best and Fostering Impeccable Company Culture

Not just anyone can join the Beat Train team! At Beat Train, we only hire experienced, talented, engaging and passionate event and wedding DJs.

It’s more than just skill on the mic that makes a Beat Train DJ. We also only hire DJs who fit the Beat Train philosophy of inclusivity and acceptance, because we believe that everyone deserves to have the wedding or event of their dreams. There’s no room on the Beat Train team for anyone who believes differently. We guarantee open minds at all times!

And, we like to keep all our DJs and event professionals in the loop – across multiple cities/markets – with quarterly ‘All Team’ Meetings. We feel that it gives everyone on staff a chance to get to know (and reconnect with) their fellow entertainers, and reminds everyone of the exceptional standards that make the backbone of the Beat Train customer experience!

Top Trends in Corporate Events for 2023 and Beyond

We feel that there are many reasons (most especially, the number of inquiries we receive) to be hopeful about the state of the event industry in 2023 and beyond! Events are back, big time! So, if your company is planning events in the coming year, and years ahead, it is best to stay in the loop and on top of the trends!

As we look ahead, here are some of the top trends we’re seeing in Corporate Events:

Secure your Choice Venue Early!

In-person events are not just back, they’re absolutely thriving! In some high-demand areas, the return to in-person events is happening more rapidly and at a greater volume than anticipated or can be facilitated! That means that the demand for venues is greater than capacity, meaning greater competition for available event space!  This combined with rising venue costs and the ongoing staffing shortages complicate the search for suitable, quality venues. So, in 2023, early planning will be crucial!

Embrace Digital Elements For In-Person Events

The Post-pandemic event industry has embraced digital. The sudden 2020 pivot to virtual events during the pandemic greatly hastened the digitization of events. So, that means that going forward, in-person corporate events will also be a little different.

In 2023, in-person events will continue to incorporate more digital interactive touch points, supported by technology. This allows event marketers and planners to capture more insights on attendee behavior and are able to create an engaging interface for guests to interact with.

More digital touchpoints also offer the opportunity to create an always-on, year-round attendee engagement and relationship.

Events Designed With Sustainability in Mind

From these days forward, sustainability is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. In our experience our clients now take sustainability into account when planning meetings and events, and many have implemented a sustainable meeting strategy. So, event organizers will be looking to focus on measuring, minimizing and reporting on the impact of their sustainability efforts. This may include things like setting measurable goals and tracking their events’ carbon footprint through elements like catering, event energy consumption, and the distance traveled by attendees.

Champion Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Fostering a spirit of equity, diversity and inclusion will mean more clients will make a concerted effort to plan and host events that are more inclusive and accessible to all. This is multi-faceted and comes in many forms such as: selecting venues that are 100% accessible (when taking into account mobility differences) or it could mean gathering relevant information, such as accessibility requirements, from attendees during the registration  process, so that any needs can be accommodated. But, the best practice in this regard is to plan for every eventuality and host more events that are 100% accessible to all.

This could also mean making sure that your event’s speakers are selected from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and walks of life, as well as offering attendees the ability to attend your event (or watch your event presentations) virtually, and ensuring that inclusive language is used throughout all event communications and in all presentations. Outline inclusion expectations with your event presenters ahead of time to alleviate any misunderstandings or miscommunications.

ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE WEDDING VENUES IN NYC – PART 2

Welcome back for Part 2 in our 3 Part series on absolutely unique wedding venues in NYC

The first installment took a look at the gorgeous Beekman building and the dramatic and theatrical Angel Orensanz Foundation, so we know that they will be hard to top, but we will try our best!

So without further ado, here are two more NYC wedding venues that are absolutely in a class of their own, and will definitely lend a not so subtle pop of drama to your day! But, don’t worry, it’s a good kind of drama!

Hall des Lumières

What could be more romantic than celebrating your nuptials amongst the larger than life projection mapping of Gustav Klimts’ The Kiss?! The Hall des Lumières Gold In Motion exhibit does not disappoint! It is a multi-sensory celebration of Klimt’s most iconic work, that uses unique, cutting-edge mapping technology, along with an elegant soundtrack and historic location to transport you to a world of love and emotion, gold and color.

Now, here’s a little about the history of the building. The Irish Emigrant Society, inaugurated the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank in 1850 to protect the money of Irish immigrants. And, the Bank Building as it stands today – developed between 1902-1912 – at 49 Chambers Street was actually the first skyscraper in New York City in the Beaux-Arts style, and was designed by the esteemed Raymond F. Almirall. Almirall chose an H-shaped plan when he designed the 187 feet tall (57 meters) and 14 stories high building, which allowed natural light to flood the rooms and from the outside gives the impression that the building has a mirrored pair of towers.

The venue is 30,000 square feet and spans two levels. The main level features 40-foot-high ceilings and custom 100+ year old laylights. Meanwhile, the lower level has a more raw

aesthetic and provides access to a historic bank vault, as well as architectural details such as the elaborate stone work surrounding the Hall, and the marble bank tellers’ registers, in an effort to protect the integrity and history of the space.

And, as a final note, the Hall des Lumières is able to host groups as small as 100, seated receptions for 250+, and even cocktail receptions for up to 1000 guests. Talk about versatility!

Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Tucked away in one of the biggest and busiest cities of the world, Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a beautiful oasis of trees, flower borders, and pastoral lawns, also known as, the perfect place for your wedding or celebration. Whether you’re interested in a gorgeous morning, or afternoon ceremony among the seasonal blossoms or a dance party indoors or beneath the stars, you’ll find the Garden has everything you could want for hosting an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime event

And, when it comes to reception spaces, The Lillian and Amy Goldman Atrium is absolutely stunning, as well as being an ecologically sustainable event space! Imagine celebrating beneath a gorgeous living roof of native grasses and wildflowers, with incredible floor-to-ceiling glass walls that overlook the Garden’s Cherry Esplanade and outdoor terrace, creating a space that’s both intimate and luxurious for weddings and other events up to 125 guests.

Moving on from there, and boasting an entirely different vibe, is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Palm House. This venue offers a gorgeous Garden setting for your ceremony, along with an outdoor terrace that’s perfect for cocktails, and, of course, the exquisitely designed glass-walled Palm House for your reception and party. The Palm House can accommodate up to 250 seated guests, so don’t fret, you can still host quite a large wedding celebration at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden!
