Modern Day Mix-Tape

Martha Stewart interviews Ari Rosenfield, founder of Beat Train Productions, and Simon Tai, DJ at Remixologists, about the proper way to make a modern day mix-tape. Mix-tapes don’t have to be a thing of the past as they suggest using a unique flash drive instead of an actual tape or CD.

Ari emphasizes how important it is to personalize your mix-tape. This shows you’ve put thought into the mix-tape and that you really had your S.O. in mind. He gives great examples such as throwing in the theme song of their favorite tv show. He also suggests introducing your S.O. to something new. Do the research and find a variety of music in their favorite genre that you think your S.O. might not have heard before. Most importantly, never regift an old mix-tape!

As a DJ and entrepreneur Ari takes great pride in striving to exceed expectations and to make sure all “T’s” are crossed and “I’s” are dotted. Since founding Beat Train Productions, Ari has DJ’d at over 225 weddings and has sent DJs to over 500 more. Here’s a few soulful love songs spanning 1959 to 1968, from Ari’s vinyl collection. If you’d like to read the great reviews Ari’s received from past clients, click here. If anyone knows how to make the perfect modern day mix-tape, it’s Ari!

Wedding Photos at Smolak Farms in North Andover

Beat Train Productions would like to share these great wedding photos at Smolak Farms in North Andover. Nicholas Minaj had the dance floor hopping as the beautiful brides, Emily and Kate, danced the night away celebrating their new marriage with their friends and family. Kate and Emily chose a gorgeous venue. Smolak Farms is located in North Andover, Massachusetts. It’s a large 107 acre farm that the Smolak family preserved in 1982 with the State of Massachusetts Agricultural Preservation Restriction Program so that it could forever be enjoyed by the public.

The bride walked down the isle to a gorgeous white gazebo placed in a lush green meadow. Following their vows they took to the dance floor under elegantly lit canopies with Nicholas Minaj as their DJ. The family and friends were happy and it was clear Kate and Emily were ecstatic to start a new chapter in their life.

Check out these wedding photos at Smolak Farms in North Andover. Tracy Rodriguez is a fantastic photographer and a pleasure to work with. She did a great job capturing special moments for Kate and Emily to look back on. To see more of Tracy Rodriguez’s photography of Kate and Emily click here.

Harbour Island Bahamas Destination Wedding DJ Trip

I just got back from my Harbour Island Bahamas destination wedding DJ trip. It was a great privilege to be a part of Hays and Ian’s wonderful celebration on this tiny but vibrant island paradise.

The Ocean View Club was the perfect beach side location for the wedding and it’s proprietors Ben and Charlie clearly take so much pride in offering exceptional hospitality. I was also fortunate to work with Jamaal <<<spell check + hyperlink>>>>, a local legend of the Bahamas DJ scene, who provided top notch audio gear for the event, and even picked me up from the airport! And the inn I stayed at, the Landing, a historic landmark which dates back over 200 years, was also amazing.

It’s been humbling to see our destination wedding DJ business starting to take off. So far this year, we’ve spun at weddings in Jamaica, Las Vegas, Uruguay, and Harbour Island Bahamas (as well as Mexico next month).-Ari

Montego Bay Jamaica Destination Wedding DJ Photos

Montego Bay Jamaica Destination Wedding DJ Photos

Below are some Montego Bay Jamaica Destination Wedding DJ Photos as well as Sam Turner’s account of his recent trip to DJ a wedding at the Round Hill Hotel and Villas.

This past February I had the opportunity to go to Jamaica for my first destination wedding. Destination weddings are especially fun, but they come with a set of challenges much different from a regular wedding. Another layer of difficulty was added when they asked me to DJ two parties on two separate days. I’d like to explain the tactics I used to overcame the challenges of a destination wedding and have a great experience.

First, the most important thing is to keep a tight schedule. When it comes to weddings in my neck of the woods, I stress punctuality. I like to show up four to five hours before the wedding starts. This is to insure that if there is some sort of emergency or catastrophe, I still arrive on time and have my equipment set up for the event.

When you take a plane to the wedding, this mindset has to be intensified. I worked on scheduling with John and Savina and I booked the earliest possible flight on the day of my first gig. I talked to them about the possibility of my flight being cancelled or delayed and the chance that they would be without music for their first night. We decided together that the risk was relatively low, and that it was acceptable if I wasn’t able to make it because airline problems are out of our control.

As luck would have it, I arrived ahead of schedule in Jamaica and proceeded directly to customs. Upon reaching the hotel where the wedding party and I were staying, I checked in and dropped off my stuff. Afterwards, I got a tour from the hotel manager to ensure I knew the spaces where all the events would be, and the timelines for moving between spaces.

When a photographer is hired for a destination wedding they bring their own equipment with them on the plane. For DJs this is much more difficult, so my clients opted to hire a company on the island to provide sound equipment for me. The bride and groom liked being able to meet and talk with their DJ here, instead of trying to……. convey over the phone what they wanted to someone they would only meet the day of their wedding.

It is super convenient having an entertainment company provide and set up most of the equipment, but it also has new pitfalls that must be avoided. I emailed and talked on the phone with the engineer who I would meet at the gig and we discussed what equipment I would use and what DJ software I was running. I stressed that I liked to be prepared and would want a sound check as early as possible. I am glad I did because we ran into some software errors the first night, but because I requested extra time they were all sorted before any guests arrived.

For the first night I DJ’d a white party on the beach. I had talked with John and Savina multiple times about feel and progression of the night, seeing as how we had two parties in two different spaces. The white party they wanted a more relaxed housey/loungey vibe. I played that sort of music until the last hour of the night, then they came to me and said, we’ve changed our minds we want to dance! As you’re perhaps getting by now, I like to be prepared, so I launched into a dance set I had up my sleeve just in case this situation arose.

The next day it was time for the actual wedding reception. A cool thing about this wedding is it was the first gig I’ve ever gotten that I had the same crowd for two days. I learned a lot about them the night before on the beach, and I spent most of my day in a cabana adjusting my crates for the specific needs of the people at the wedding. Not something I normally have the luxury of doing, and it was a real treat!

After a day of preparation and anticipation I arrived at the wedding party and set up my equipment. I played for dinner and facilitated all the wedding formalities needed (bridal parties intros, toasts, first dance etc). Then I launched into the music the bride and groom had asked me to play for this party. It was a mix of current pop, throwback 90’s and 00’s jams, mixed with some big room house from the bride and groom’s college days. All the music was hitting well and we danced the night away!

To conclude, destination weddings are a blast. They’re challenging and provide a good change to a DJs routine. I will forever remember my first destination wedding and hope to do more in the future.

Massachusetts Horticultural Society Wedding Photos

We DJed a great wedding for Anuja and Ashley last spring and are excited to share these Massachusetts Horticultural Society wedding photos. The reception was held on Elm Bank’s beautiful grounds located 30 minutes out of Boston. Elm Bank has more than 30 acres of fields, forests, and architectural gardens, the perfect getaway to have a picture-perfect wedding. With the help of Gracie Lou Events, the wedding felt intimate and elegant even thought it was a large scale event with hundreds in attendance. The event production company has a strong emphasis on design, style, and simplicity and the pictures from the tent reception are absolutely stunning.

Photography is provided by Nicole Chan, a Boston based wedding and family photographer, who describes her style as a mix between creative documentary, casually posed, and beautiful photos. Her goal is to create candid and raw photos and go beyond the scope of just your generic “pretty photos”. Nicole works to tell a story in an authentic manner and to create memorable moments to last years and years. Style Me Pretty Feature, Wythe Hotel Wedding

We DJed a gorgeous Wythe Hotel wedding that was a Style Me Pretty Style feature! This was a wedding that looked like it came out of a New York fairy tale. Photography was provided by The Wedding Artists Collective and planned by Ever Swoon. We particularly loved their video which is featured on the blog, a must see for sure!

From The Bride…Even before we got engaged, we both always dreamed of having a whimsical, vintage-inspired wedding. We wanted to create an atmosphere that was festive, not fussy, and the Wythe was the ideal venue. We chose Poppies and Posies for all florals because of their rustic, straight-from-the-garden aesthetic; we opted for a family-style menu to encourage friends and family to mingle and connect with others at their table. We had a pushcart stocked with mini ice cream sandwiches and paper cones with mini doughnut holes so guests could walk and eat and dance all at once. My favorite part of the day? Walking up behind Mike, the New York City skyline as our backdrop, and tapping him on the shoulder. It was our first look. And when he finally saw me for the first time, I thought he was about to plotz. It was the single most blissful moment of my life.
